- Two suspected hijackers crashed a VW Polo during a high-speed police chase at the N3 north and London Road off-ramp in Alexandra.
- Both men were taken to Tembisa Hospital under police guard and are linked to cash-in-transit heists across Gauteng province.
Two suspected hijackers are in hospital after a police chase through Alexandra ended in a crash.
The incident happened at the N3 north and London Road off-ramp in the north of Johannesburg. Police spotted the suspects, who were believed to be involved in a hijacking, and tried to stop them.
Instead, the pair sped off, leading to a high-speed chase. The chase ended when their VW Polo crashed into three other vehicles.
Driving at over 160 km/h, the suspects collided with other vehicles, leaving two other people from those vehicles injured.
The N3 northbound was closed to traffic for most of the afternoon, leaving several motorists frustrated and using alternative routes.
Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale said the Gauteng DPCI were executing a bench warrant for a murder that took place in Florida, west of Johannesburg, in November 2024.
“When they tried to pull the vehicle over, the suspect’s vehicle accelerated.
“A high-speed chase ensued, and at the intersection of London Road and the N3 off-ramp, the suspect’s VW Polo collided with a Mazda as well as a Hyundai bakkie.
“Four people were injured in the accident and were taken to hospital for medical attention,” she said.
Colonel Mogale said the suspect who was being traced was arrested. He has also been linked to ten more cases, while his passenger is a person of interest.
Both men were injured and taken to Tembisa Hospital for treatment under police guard.
Police sources at the scene say the suspects are linked to a string of serious crimes.
Once they are discharged from hospital, they will be charged with multiple crimes. These are expected to include hijacking and possibly charges related to armed robberies.
Several onlookers gathered at the crime scene, with multiple law enforcement agencies securing the area.
Police are still investigating and working to link the men to other unsolved cases.
Mogale said the suspect will appear in court soon and the investigation continues.
