Many believe that 2022 has been a dismal year, what with war in Ukraine and Ethiopia, the worst inflation in 40 years, a Covid pandemic that still lingers and kills, and Stage 6 loadshedding.
But Atlantic magazine has pointed out the good news: 2022 has been a year of massive scientific breakthroughs. Human ingenuity has never been so good.
This was the year that, for the first time, we saw pictures from the beginning of time – thanks to the Webb telescope.
Also, medicine was created that can reverse organ death in pigs (with a human application just around the corner).
Writer Derek Thompson points out: If we have the power to revive the heart or other organs of the recently dead, soon we will be able to revive people who have recently died.
The first embryo was made from stem cells this year.
A single vaccine for all flu was developed – as was a vaccine for malaria.
There were unheard of advances in treating cancer – and obesity therapy trials received their best ever results.
Medical science was well on its way to cracking a cure for multiple sclerosis. This was also the year that lab-grown meat became a thing.
The message should be that life might not feel that great, but the future looks a lot more promising.
But if you are thinking of living forever, relax: that is not going to happen, not within our lifetimes anyway.
